Perimenopause means “almost menopause” and refers to the time period during which a woman’s body makes its natural transition toward permanent infertility (menopause). It is also called the menopausal transition. Women start perimenopause at different ages. Anyone may notice signs of progression toward menopause, such as menstrual irregularity, sometime in her 40s. But some women notice changes as early as their mid-30s. The level of  estrogen — the main female hormone — rises and falls unevenly during perimenopause.  Menstrual cycles may lengthen or shorten, and she may begin having menstrual cycles in which her ovaries don’t release an egg (ovulate)Once  women experience  12 consecutive months without a menstrual period,  than menopause is officially started, and the perimenopause period is over.

Symptoms of Peri menopause:

The possible symptoms  are described below:

*Irregular Menstruation:During this time irregularity occurs on menstrual  cycles. The time distance between periods  may lengthen or shorten. As a result of this period may occur twice a month or it may not occur on a month.

*Hot Flash & Disturbance of Sleeping: Almost  65% to 75% women experience hot flash during this time, but this varies from individual to individual. Sometimes  It may generate inconvenient sleeping, & unexpected sweating.

Changing  Of Mood: Always  Changing of mood, depressed feelings, lack of interest for everything  are some prime  symptoms of peri menopause.

Alteration of Sexual Function:Almost all women realize significant change on their sexual desire or feel less sexual drive.

Complication on Bladder & Vagina:During this time Estrogen hormone diminishes as a result vaginal tissues lose lubrication & elasticity, & it may cause various infections.

 Deterioration of Bones: Deficiency of Estrogen hormone  decays the bones, sometimes it increases  the possibility of Osteoporosis.

Changing of Cholesterol Level: Deficiency of Estrogen  hormone  increases bad cholesterol(LDL) &  reduces  good  cholesterol (HDL) & it may  also develop heart  diseases for women.

Diminution of Fertility: Irregular ovulation stimulates infertility, that also diminishes chance of being pregnant. Absence of period for more than 12 months is symptom of menopause, on  this condition  consulting a doctor is very important.

Palpitation: Sometimes   women  experiences  palpitation , which requires doctors consultancy.

Sometimes  symptoms appear  so  gradually  that it is not understand  easily. At first stage   the deficiency of Estrogen  and  progesterone   hormone does not find out . We only  feel the menopause when symptoms appear deeply. Consult a doctor is  required when it starts to hamper our life. Treatment will be started as early as we consult  a doctor. Smoking: Smoking  is one of the prime factor for early menopause, women who smoke experience  early menopause  compare than  to non -smokers.

Family History: Sometimes  family history   stimulates perimenopause.

Infertility: Infertility is another factor  for perimenopause once in a while.

Cancer Treatment: There is a possibility of this   for taking cancer treatment on childhood. Cancer treatment-such as Chemotherapy & Pelvic radiation  therapy  may develop  this.

Hysterectomy: Hysterectomy  means removal of uterus through surgery.It is also responsible for stimulating this.


Irregular  menstruation  sometimes  generate various problems such as:

1.Massive bleeding on menstruation  period.

2.Continuous bleeding for more than 8 days.

3.Experiencing  bleeding on   different time except  menstruation period.

Oral Contraceptive: Oral contraceptive pill can be used depending on doctors suggestion. It supports on regular period &  minimizes  the quantity of bleeding.

Progesterone  Therapy: This therapy is also apply, when  women do not want to take pills. This is also beneficial for heavy bleeding  on perimenopause.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): There are two types of this therapy, such as

*Estrogen Progestoron Therapy(EPT):This treatment is  best solution  for those women who have uterus on  normal condition.

*Estrogen Therapy(ET): This treatment is applicable for those who have to remove uterus through  surgery.

Hormone replacement therapy assists  in decreasing physical complexity. It is also  detrimental  to consume hormone pill without doctor advice.

*women who experience natural menopause, & who face this before age of 40 due to surgery.

*Who suffer various complexity like-hot flash, night sweating.

Self   Help:

1.Try to maintain particular time for sleeping .

2.Dont omit Physical exercise for a single  day.It is better to perform exercise at morning.

4.Drinking warm milk before sleeping is also  beneficial  for health , because it  enhances not only good sleeping but also supplies a   good  source of calcium.

5.Always try to  think positively.

Perimenopause  is  time when  the sign of  menopause  is prominent. Due to infertility, and irregular menstrual cycles women feel depressed, and sometimes fail to maintain  normal life style. It is  very common  occurrence , so  women should try to modify their  life positively. Eating properly, maintenance of balanced diet is very essential. The Diet should enrich with sufficient  calcium, low fat& high fiber meal. Try  to avoid stress. Regular  physical exercise , meditation  also assists in keeping good mood, develops mental satisfaction.
